INDEBT (2018) is a cultural destination and non-profit organization dedicated to ‘creating spaces’, both conceptual and physical, while actively bridging cultural divides.

The fluid project manifests itself through an exhibition program, communal gatherings, and the facilitation of cultural locations throughout the city.

In both its organizational structure as well as curatorial selection, INDEBT aims to rethink conventions and expectations in the art world and broader creative field.

Coming from a place of self-initiation and urgency, INDEBT strives to generate a lasting positive impact, leaving the world a better place than we found it.

At its core INDEBT is a mentality rather than a fixed physical location or set of activities. We believe meaningful work emerges through kindness, care, initiative, collaboration and exchange. In our cultural projects, we take an omnivorous approach to arts and culture, beyond narrow categories and rigid conventions. Our program is build around emerging practises on the forefront of culture, that cross boundaries, overlap disciplines, and generate new ways of working and thinking together. In our placemaking we create spaces for culture that combine presentation, production and gathering. These spaces aim to and keep arts and culture active components of the commodified urban environment, while reconnecting people and nurturing stronger forms of community in a time of increasing individualization.
The name INDEBT works on two, reinforcing levels: On an individual level, INDEBT refers to the precarity many artists are facing: A life outside established systems, sustained through resourcefulness, but “in debt” as a material reality. On a societal level, INDEBT acknowledges that the system itself is broken – fractured, unequal, and far from fair. Our societies carry debts of many kinds: ethical, cultural, ecological, and historical. We are all “Indebted’ to recognize these conditions and contribute to a better world, in whatever way we can. For us, this is through culture, in its broadest sense.
