INDEBT (2018) is a cultural destination and non-profit organization dedicated to ‘creating spaces’, both conceptual and physical, while actively bridging cultural divides.

The fluid project manifests itself through an exhibition program, communal gatherings, and the facilitation of cultural locations throughout the city.

In both its organizational structure as well as curatorial selection, INDEBT aims to rethink conventions and expectations in the art world and broader creative field.

INDEBT strives to generate a lasting positive impact, leaving the world a better place than we found it.

NAVIGATING THE UNSEEN

REIN KOOYMAN | NAVIGATING THE UNSEEN

INDEBT is excited to present Navigating the Unseen, a solo show by Rein Kooyman. Through installation work, photography, and video, the exhibition showcases the artist’s connection with the National Parc des Écrins in France.

A unique collection of millennia-old slate, granite, and river stones is gathered. Each stone is attached to a hemp string and individually assembled, demanding precise commitment to physical and mental discipline. Once overlooked on the ground, these stones now find temporary stages as spherical installations.
In this repetitive act, carried out on-site within the gallery space, Rein Kooyman experiences a temporary simplification of his current human existence. Time becomes fluid: a space where past, present, and future blend seamlessly. The act of repetition releases time's grasp, offering a momentary escape from the constraints we often impose on ourselves. To suspend the 2,000 stones used in the installation, four kilometers of thread are required. This results in a visual and tactile representation of the artist’s journey at the National Parc les Écrins and the transformation of these ancient stones.
Important to note is that the installation is temporary. After the presentation concludes, the artist will return the stones to their origins, symbolizing the cyclical nature of existence and the impermanence of our human constructs.

In his artistic practice Rein Kooyman (1992, NL) explores the relationship we, as humans, have with nature, focusing on ideas such as temporality and impermanence. Previous exhibitions include Restructured and This Too Shall Pass, exhibited at het Nieuwe Instituut in 2022.

Navigating the Unseen is kindly supported by the AFK & Stichting Stokroos.
